Winter makes us think of hot chocolate, coffee, soup, holiday tunes, and cozy sweaters… but it also reminds us of that horrible feeling when you take off your hat and hear static and hair strands snapping, or when you style your hair all morning and open the door to find that it looks like it's going to snow. No matter what your favorite season is, let’s just say winter is NOT curly hair-friendly.

Why is winter so bad for natural hair? It’s a perfect storm of bad conditions. Wind and harsh cold air suck moisture out of your hair, and cause tangles. But once you’re inside, the heated air is so dry, your office can be almost as bad as sitting under a blow dryer! All this dryness accelerates frizz, breakage, and split ends, and the shock of extreme temperature changes puts additional stress on your hair. As if this weren’t enough, hats, scarves, and sweaters are made from material that insulates heat, keeping your body warm- but they pull and snag on your hair, breaking strands left and right. Whether you’re inside or outside, warm or cold, it seems like there’s no escape.
But you don’t need to hibernate until the weather is warm and friendly again! With the right tips and routine, you CAN keep your hair healthy and happy throughout the winter months. In response to many questions from my friends on IG and YouTube Channel,  and Limpho Style Bubble Facebook community members, I have compiled 10 must-know tips for winter haircare.

1. Use protective styles to your advantage. You don't have to put your hair in braids in May and leave them in until July, but winter is NOT the time to do a wash and go everyday. Wind and cold/dry air suck moisture out of your hair, leaving it brittle, weaker, and more prone to breakage. Protective styles cut down the manipulation to your hair, which will prevent breakage, and they tuck ends and strands safely out of the way of wind and cold air.

2. That said, don’t put your hair in a protective style and forget about it. These styles will help your hair retain more moisture than if you wore your hair out, but your hair WILL eventually dry out, even in a protective style. Pay attention to your hair and refresh or change your style often. I  recommend changing or redoing the style every two weeks or three.
3. Double up on nutrients! Your hair needs protein, nutrients, and vitamins to grow and remain strong and healthy. It’s a good idea to eat healthy foods year-round for the health of your hair (and your body!) but it’s especially important in the winter as a precaution against that dry and cold air. Likewise, you may not be as sweaty or thirsty in the winter as you were in the summer, but be sure to drink just as much water. There is no better way to keep your hair hydrated and moisturized than providing water straight to your body.
4. Use steam to moisturize your hair. Steam is just warm, airborn water particles, which can easily penetrate and hydrate your hair strands. One of the easiest ways to treat your hair to steam therapy: Take a warm shower or warm bath and ditch the shower cap or stop neglecting head baths. Just make sure you don’t leave the house with wet hair!
5. Use an anti-humectant to seal in moisture, especially after washing or moisturizing your hair. I recommend olive oil or jojoba oil, or other oils that are liquid at room temperature (no one wants their curls frozen with solidified coconut oil!)

6. Watch out for knitted hats and scarves. The rough material will snag on natural curls and cause breakage. Don’t worry, you don’t have to let your ears freeze! Just use a thin silk cap in between your hair and hat. It may seem like an inconvenient step to take, but your hair (and your ears) will thank you! (You can do the same thing with scarves- line the outside of your scarf with a thin silk scarf to protect your hair from friction.)
7. Trim, trim, trim. Your ends are extra vulnerable in the winter, prone to breakage and split ends. Cut off split ends as soon as you see them to keep your hair healthy.
8. Stay away from heat. Steaming your hair is good, but put away flat irons and keep your blow dryer on the cool setting for the season. These tools take moisture out of your hair, a process already accelerated by the wind and dry air outside.

9. Stay away from drying chemicals. Many hair products include ingredients that strip oils and moisture out of your hair, which your hair can’t afford to lose in the winter! Check the ingredient list before you wash, condition, moisturize, or style your hair.
10. My most important tip is that you can never deep condition too much! Seriously. Deep conditioners give your hair exactly what it needs during the winter, which is penetrating every strand with moisture and nutrients. As long as you use a deep conditioner with all natural ingredients like my DIY (Avocado, egg, olive oil)  conditioner the more you treat your hair, the more protected it will be.

Summer makes us think of beach days, dresses, cookouts, and carefree fun! Summer is also the time to have fun with your natural hair and to let it shine. We’re finally free from the cold, snow, and wind of winter that necessitate tucking our hair away. But we also spend more time outdoors in the summer, which presents its own challenges to keeping natural hair healthy.
So before you head to the beach or pool, review Limpho Style Bubble’s 10 tips for maintaining healthy, beautiful natural hair this summer!

SUN: Even though the cold and wind of winter are gone, your hair still needs protection. The sun’s UV radiation can quickly damage your hair if you are outside for long, as well as burn your scalp and even discolor your hair. Use a leave-in conditioner with SPF to protect your hair and scalp, and if you know you’ll be outside for an extended period of time, cover your hair with a scarf or hat.
HEAT: The sun is already drying out your hair, so don’t amplify the effect with heat tools. (Plus, who wants to deal with a blowout in summer humidity?) So put away the straightener and blow dryer, and make the summer heat-free!
CLIMATE: Humid and arid climates have different effects on natural hair, and require different products.
  • In arid environments, the dry air tends to suck moisture from your hair. In this case, you’ll need to use anti-humectants to protect your hair from drying out. Olive oil and jojoba oil are a few anti-humectants you can try.
  • If you live in a humid climate, use humectants which draw moisture in from the air to moisturize your hair. Some natural humectants are honey and glycerin. However, if you hate frizz, don’t use humectants even in humid environments.

STYLING: Speaking of humidity and frizz- use them to your advantage! Summer might not be the perfect time for a blowout, but it is a great time to rock an afro, puffs, or other voluminous styles. Pay attention to how your hair reacts to humidity, and use that knowledge to try different styles and celebrate your natural hair.
PRODUCTS: Use lighter products in the summer, and less of them. Since you sweat more in the summer, limiting product buildup on your scalp will keep you from needing to wash your hair all the time, and will keep your hair from looking weighed down.
SHAMPOO: Even using less products in the summer, you might need to shampoo more often than normal, depending on how active your lifestyle is. Use a sulfate-free, clarifying shampoo after outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, running, biking, etc… anything that results in sweat, saltwater, or chlorine coming in contact with your hair. If you do these activities more than once a week, use co-wash on some days. We recommend Natural Cleansing Avocado Shampoo, which cleans your hair and scalp without stripping moisture.
SWIMMING: Coat your hair with oil prior to swimming. This limits the amount of chlorine or saltwater your hair will absorb (both chlorine and saltwater dry out natural hair.) I also recommend putting your hair in twists, which further limits water absorption as well as tangles. After swimming, wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo or co-wash. If you swim often, integrate protein treatments into your regimen to maintain the strength of your hair.
MOISTURE: This one is simple: keep your hair moisturized. (Do I sound like a broken record yet?) The summer sun and heat tend to strip moisture away from your hair, and shampooing more often makes it worse. Use a moisturizer or leave-in conditioner every day, or try the LOC (liquid, oil, cream) method to keep your hair from drying out throughout the day.

DEEP CONDITION: Speaking of moisture, deep conditioning is the best way to keep your hair hydrated (and nourished) throughout the summer. Deep condition at least every two weeks, and try doing it more often if your hair seems to be drying out too quickly.
DRINKING WATER: Drink lots of water and eat healthy foods! If your body is dehydrated or malnourished, your hair will be too. Most doctors recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water or two water bottles. Remember if you’re sweating, you need to drink even more!
With these tips, you are all set to look and feel amazing this summer. Have fun!
The Secret to Longer Natural Hair
We’ve all seen articles, hair brands, medications, advertisements, and products claiming to have the secret to hair growth... and they're usually a scam. So many people are looking for the secret to longer hair. Ads cater to that desire by claiming to to have an easy solution.

You probably already know that the truth isn't easy. If it were, we'd all have the hair length of our dreams. Hair growth is a slow process that requires commitment and consistency, and there's no instant or easy way to achieve it.

But don't be disappointed yet! There is a secret to hair growth... but it's not easy. The truth is:

HEALTHY HAIR GROWTH IS A REFLECTION OF A HEALTHY BODY.

This should be your one takeaway from this article: you need to make permanent and consistent changes to your lifestyle in order to see results. Read on to learn the healthy practices that promote hair growth. If you follow the advice in this article, you will see results!

The appearance of longer hair is the combination of two factors: actual growth, and length retention. You need BOTH for your hair to get longer, and BOTH are dependent on a healthy body and lifestyle. Here are Limpho Style Bubble tips for each!

How to accelerate actual hair growth:

1. Maintain a balanced scalp pH. The natural pH of your scalp is between 4.5 - 5.5, the ideal acidity for preventing fungi and bacteria that can inflame the scalp, slow hair growth, and even cause hair loss. I recommend checking the pH of your hair products and avoiding alkali products (with a very high pH.) Jojoba oil is an excellent way to balance scalp pH, since it mimics the pH of your natural scalp oils. Vitamin E oil also helps balance scalp pH and repairs damage to your hair follicles.

2. Reduce inflammation and infection. This one is a no-brainer: the healthier your scalp, the easier your hair can grow. Jamaican black castor oil is effective at warding off infections. Lavender, orange, and lemon essential oils are anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial. Apple cider vinegar rinses can kill off bacteria and reduce inflammation.

3. Promote blood circulation to your scalp. Blood circulation feeds your hair follicles with the oxygen, nutrients, and minerals they need to grow. You can increase blood circulation with head massages, regular stretching, and yoga! Many essential oils, especially lavender essential oil, increase blood circulation to the scalp.

4. Clarify and exfoliate, especially if you use a lot of styling products. Your hair follicles need oxygen to grow, so make sure your scalp can breathe.  If you shampoo every two weeks or less often, consider using a cowash or doing apple cider vinegar treatments in-between washes to reduce product buildup and exfoliate your scalp.

5. Don't overwash. I know, I just said to make sure to wash and exfoliate your scalp! But shampoo has an alkali pH, which can offset the normal pH of your scalp. It also strips your hair of sebum, which is essential in maintaining the normal pH of your scalp. Don't shampoo more often than once a week, and use a gentle shampoo  that won't strip your hair of sebum.

6. Reduce stress. Did you know that excessive stress can push more of your hairs into the telogen (falling) phase of the life cycle? Reducing stress will reduce hair loss and reduce physical tension in your scalp, which can stunt hair growth. Everyone has different ways of reducing stress, so find what works for you, whether it's journaling, spending time with close friends, reading, or spending time outside. The following activities are universally helpful in reducing stress: exercise, sleep, yoga, meditation, and essential oils.

7. Change your diet. Your hair needs vitamins, nutrients, and protein to grow. While you can add them to your hair topically, they must be present in your diet as well. Eat foods rich in protein, iron, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, biotin, and niacin.  But be careful- I said change your diet, not to go on a diet! If your calorie intake is too low, your body will limit the nutrients and and energy allocated to hair growth.

8. Exercise regularly! Exercise is one of the best ways to follow many of these other tips. It reduces stress and promotes blood circulation and oxygen/nutrient flow to the scalp. Sweat itself helps exfoliate the scalp and unclog hair follicles.

How to improve length retention

1. Trim your hair regularly. I know, it feels so counterproductive! However, split ends and single strand knots lead to tangles and dryness, which in turn cause breakage. They can even increase hair loss by making it impossible for you to detangle your hair gently. Trim your hair every few months (3-4 times a year) to keep your ends healthy and retain length.

2. Moisture is the secret to length retention. Moisturized hair is more elastic, less prone to breakage, and less prone to tangles. This will all help you retain length as your hair grows. Moisturizing your natural hair daily with water. And and seal with oil after. If you want to know kinds of seals to use, click here to check them out.

3. Drink enough water. If you are dehydrated or under-hydrated on a regular basis, your body will ration less moisture to your hair. This results in dry hair. Make sure you drink (8 glasses) of water a day for healthy and soft hair.

4. Deep condition your hair, especially with ingredients that promote hair growth. Use conditioners that  contain:

a. Avocados, which promote hair growth, prevent hair loss, and moisturize hair.
b. Coconut oil, which prevents breakage
c. Tea tree oil, which prevents infections
d. Lavender essential oil, which is anti-inflammatory
e. Vitamin E, which repairs hair follicles and reduces inflammation
f. Citric acid, which prevents bacterial growth.

5. Avoid chemicals that strip your hair (such as sulfates, isopropyl alcohol, ethanol alcohol, polyethylene glycol, etc.) as well as chemicals that coat your hair without moisturizing it (mineral oil, silicones, etc.) Such ingredients make your hair more brittle and prone to breakage.

6. Avoid harsh color, chemical, or heat treatments. These treatments strip moisture out of your hair, and increase your likelihood of breakage and hair loss.

I hope these tips on hair growth were helpful!

In a previous post , I did a scientific breakdown of benefits of Coconut oil for natural hair, with suggestions for where I got mine, and how to go about using it on your hair.  So I decided to dedicate this entire article to 4C naturals!

4C hair has the tightest curls of all hair patterns, with hairs forming tight s's, z's or coils. 4C hair shares many of the other characteristics of type 4 hair, and of course, individuals with 4C hair can have different hair densities and porosities, which changes how your hair behaves. However, these are some of the defining qualities of 4C hair:
  • Hair dries out quickly, or struggles to maintain moisture more than other curl patterns
  • Individuals can experience extreme shrinkage, sometimes up to 75%!
  • Hair is prone to tangles and matting if not properly cared for and regularly detangled
  • Hair is fragile and prone to breakage
So how do you address the unique challenges (and enjoy the unique beauty!) that come with 4C hair? The trick is a natural hair regimen that keeps your hair healthy. Here are 7 tips from Limpho Style Bubble.

1. RETAIN MOISTURE. Even if you have low porosity hair, 4C hair needs to be kept moisturized. The kinks and coils of 4C curls prevent the distribution of sebum (natural oil produced by your scalp) throughout your hair. This allows your hair to dry out faster than other curl patterns, so you need to take extra precautions to keep your hair moisturized. Find a good moisturizer AND a good sealant. Oils like coconut oil and olive oil, and creams like Shea butter are effective at sealing moisture in your hair. If you wear a protective style, don’t forget to moisturize regularly!
2. SHAMPOO MINDFULLY. Yes, you still need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean- but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfates or any  other harmful ingredients, and opt for a mild, sulfate-free shampoo like this African Black Soap If your hair gets dirty more often, alternate shampoo with cowash or follow shampoo with an apple cider vinegar rinse. Wash your hair in sections to prevent tangles.

3. DETANGLE. This is extra important for 4C girls because the tight curl pattern of your hair can cause hairs to curl and coil around each other, causing tangles. Tangles lead to breakage, which hinders growth. Detangle regularly and gently, using a wide-toothed comb on damp hair (don’t use a brush!) Use conditioners to add slip and help with the process. When you find knots, don’t yank- use your fingers to gently pull hairs out of the knot.
4. DEEP CONDITION. While I would recommend deep conditioning every 2 weeks, 4C hair, in particular, thrives with weekly deep conditioning treatments. This will keep your hair healthy, bouncy, and shiny, and will prevent snagging and tangles. I recommend COCO SOUFFLÉ, which is a completely natural option. It provides moisture, slip, nourishment, and strength!
5. AVOID OVERSTYLING. Styling products dry out your hair, build up on your scalp, weigh down your hair, etc. Touching and styling your hair excessively can also lead to breakage. Explore styles that require less styling products, or alternate between high and low manipulation styles to give your hair a break.
6. STYLE WITH SHRINKAGE IN MIND. Shrinkage can be frustrating because it keeps you from seeing growth, and it can also make your hair more susceptible to tangles and single strand knots. You can explore heat-free styles that stretch your hair, such as twist outs, braid outs, and bantu knots. But don't forget to embrace and celebrate shrinkage, and have fun with it! 4C hair lends itself to so many styling options.
Suggested 4C Styles
  • Two strand twists
  • Twist outs
  • Bantu knots
  • Loose high & low Puff
  • Afro
  • Buns or space buns
  • As with any other hair type, you can use clip ins, extensions, or crochet braids to switch up your look or add length.
7. LOVE YOUR 4C HAIR. Some people have grown up hearing that 4C hair is unmanageable, unattractive, or otherwise undesirable. These ideas are as far from the truth as it gets! 4C hair is not only beautiful but incredibly versatile, capable of infinite styles and looks. 4C hair is also easily managed and taken care of with the correct regimen and products. Celebrate your hair with pride!

A very warm welcome back to Limpho Style Bubble blog. I am back with another post on the topic of using oils to coconut oil for natural hair growth on black african hair 4cgrow natural hair. Today I will be focusing on coconut oil and its benefits for hair growth. I will try and break down some facts on coconut, and will asses some questions along the lines of: Can coconut oil grow natural hair? What type of coconut oil is best for hair growth? The benefits of coconut oil for natural hair, and my experience using coconut oil for natural hair growth.
No doubt there is already a wealth of opinions about coconut oil on web and whether or not it can grow hair. So I will base this article on scientific factual information, combined with my experience using coconut oil.

Can I Use Coconut Oil to Grow Natural Hair on 4C Afro Hair?

Proper hair care is essential to improve hair growth and it has been noted that when applied regularly, coconut oil stimulates hair growth by getting deep into the hair follicles. As with castor oil, coconut oil does not directly grow hair, rather it is the nutrients found in the oil that helps to prevents hair breakage, split ends and other problems that make your hair does not grow properly. The oils simply act as a barrier or shield to protect the hair, and adds luster, shine and softness to the hair. This oil barrier often results in less breakage and ultimately healthier hair. So when used over a period of time, this barrier also contributes to longer hair length. Coconut oil also acts as a deep conditioner, free of frizz and prevents split ends. It has linoleic acid that helps keep hair well hydrated and maintain its elasticity. It also contains oleic acid that helps to get thicker and stronger hair in a natural way.

My Experience Using Coconut Oil for Natural Hair Growth On Black Hair?

So what is my experience using coconut oil? The first thing I noticed was that when applied, it just glided through my hair. It also made my hair feel very soft. Bear in mind I used organic natural coconut oil I had bought at Shoprite, that literally smelt of coconut.
The good thing about coconut oil is that a little goes a long way, and it was probably the only oil I just applied directly to my hair without having to mix to other oils. Castor oil was very thick and I had to blend it with Moringa oil to give it a better consistency.

When using oils, it is best applied to the scalp not the hair. Once applied to the scalp it will naturally flow to the rest of your hair to provide nourishment. However, with Coconut oil I was able to apply it to my hair without my hair feeling overly greasy, heavy or limp.

As for hair growth, I didn’t notice anything too magical. But for nourishment and moisture, it was certainly amazing.

These essential fatty acids bind to the proteins in the hair and protect the roots and strands of hair from breaking that helps for effective hair growth.

Coconut Oil Hot Oil Treatment for Natural Hair Growth on Afro Hair

The best way to do a hot oil treatment with coconut oil is to combine it with fresh herbs. Here a simple step by step guide:
1. Fill a glass with coconut oil and then pour it into a saucepan to simmer until it melts. Avoid using the microwave, as it could burn the product.

2. Add some dried cassia leaves, nettle leaves and green tea leaves to the oil in the pan and leave the oil to cool down for 5 minutes. Once cooled, pour into a spray bottle.

3. Now that your coconut oil and herbs are ready, the next step is to moisten your hair with warm water.

4. Now you must apply the coconut oil throughout your hair, from the roots to the tips.

5. When you have all the hair full of product, massage your hair between 3 and 5 minutes so that the coconut oil penetrates better in the hair and, also, its excellent properties.

6. The next step is to wrap your hair, either with a shower cap or towel and let the product act for 1 hour. You can also leave it overnight while you sleep.

7. Once the time has passed, rinse your hair liberally with warm water until the coconut oil is removed.

For the coconut oil to give results, you must perform this procedure between 1 and 2 times per week.

Rinsing coconut oil with lemon juice.
Lemon has powerful restorative properties that are ideal especially for those hair that is especially damaged and, therefore, does not grow properly.
For this natural remedy, you should only add to 1 glass of coconut oil the juice of 1 whole lemon and stir everything until a homogeneous mixture remains. When you have the mixture, you should only apply it on the scalp giving a light massage and let it rest in your hair all night. The next day, rinse your hair thoroughly with cold water to properly remove the product.

Mask of coconut oil with avocado
Avocado is packed with various essential nutrients for hair growth that, in addition, also has moisturizing and regenerating properties that will deeply hydrate the hair fibers and prevent hair breakage.
To prepare this mask, you must heat 1 glass of coconut oil (as in the previous section) and mix it with the juice extracted from 1 ripe avocado until it forms a kind of paste or mask. Then, you should apply this paste throughout the hair, especially on the scalp, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cold water and wash your hair regularly.

Coconut Oil With Castor Oil For Hair Growth
This combination is especially indicated for weak and damaged hair and to prevent hair loss, since it has powerful moisturizing and circulatory properties.
To use this remedy, mix 2 tablespoons of this oil in 1 cup of coconut oil , and liquid and stir well. Then, you’ll just have to apply it to your hair and let it sit on it for two hours. Finally, rinse your hair with cold water and wash your hair regularly.

Coconut Oil As a Hair Loss Treatment for African Hair

If you are experiencing unusual hair loss, or your hair is simply not growing keep in mind that hair growth will not only include your hair care in general, but it also depends on your health, diet, regular exercise and other hair care regimen. The application of coconut oil to the hair regularly, may only be of limited help. This is why I would advice to visit your GP or a trichologist to find out what is wrong.

Coconut oil will only help you to care for hair as it conditions, protects and moisturizes the scalp. But it is not a magical hair growth treatment.

Remember, that if your hair only seems to grow to a certain length and then stop, chances are you have flat hair follicles! Round follicles grip the hair better so have a better chance of growing hair longer while flat hair follicles are often associated with shorter hair lengths.

As your hair grows and gets longer it also gets heavier until the follicle gets too heavy to hold and sheds the hair. Don’t panic though – it will grow another! No matter whether you have regular hair cuts and conditioning hair treatments, how long your hair grows can sometimes be out of your hands.

Can I Use Coconut Oil to Stop Breakage On Natural Hair?

Breakage is temporary condition that can easily be rectified with deep conditioning. If your tips are dry, worn or in poor condition, your hair may benefit from using coconut oil regularly. When trying to identify the causes of breakage, always bear in mind that the scalp produces natural oils that maintain a certain level of moisture in the hair , but the level of care that the oils will have will depend on the type of hair.
